Descripción
IU is a South Korean singer-songwriter, actress and radio host. She is considered one of the most famous and influential people in the entertainment sector in South Korea, and is known in her own country as “South Korea’s Little Sister”.
She began her career in 2007 at the age of just 13 as a trainee at the then label LOEN Entertainment (now Kakao Entertainment) and made her debut under the same label in September 2008 with the EP “Lost and Found” at the age of 15. Although her subsequent singles were also very successful and further increased her popularity in South Korea, it was the single “Good Day” from her third EP “Real”, which was released in December 2010, that finally made her the most popular singer in the country at the time. “Good Day” spent five weeks at No. 1 on the South Korean Gaon Digital Charts and was also voted No. 1 on Billboard’s “100 Greatest K-Pop Songs of the 2010s” in 2019.
She confirmed her title as the “Nation’s Little Sister”, an informal title in South Korea that only three other female singers and one other male singer besides IU have ever achieved, with her next two albums – the EP “Real+” and her second studio album “Last Fantasy”.
In 2020, Kakao Entertainment opened a specially created label for IU, EDAM Entertainment (EDAM = MADE backwards), in which she has her own staff. Another person signed with the label for the first time in July 2021, actress Sin Se-Gyeong. In October 2022, solo singer Woodz was introduced as another new artist on the label.
In addition to her music career, IU is also involved as an actress and host of radio and television programs, starting with a supporting role in the successful teen series “Dream High” (2011). Her role as a desperate office worker in “My Mister” (2018) received consistently positive reviews, and she received her first nomination for Best TV Actress for her role as Lee Ji-An at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards. A year later, she even made her film debut at the 2019 Jeju Film Festival with the film “Amudo Eomneun Got”.
