Tooru HARA (Persona)

Tooru Hara was a Japanese film producer and businessman. After graduating from university, he worked at the animation studio Toei Douga from 1959. There he was part of the production of the film “Horus: Prince of the Sun” by director Isao Takahata, whose financial failure was one of the reasons that led them to leave Toei.

Shortly after leaving Toei, Hara founded Studio Top Craft, the immediate predecessor of Studio Ghibli, in 1972. Hara remained involved with Ghibli until 1991, producing several films before leaving the studio over a disagreement with Hayao Miyazaki about the construction of a new studio building. Hara died in 2021 at the age of 85.

Tooru Hara war ein japanischer Filmproduzent und Geschäftsmann. Nach seinem Universitätsabschluss arbeitete er ab 1959 bei dem Animationsstudio Toei Douga. Dort war er auch an dem Film »Horus: Prince of the Sun« von Regisseur Isao Takahata beteiligt, dessen finanzieller Misserfolg ein Grund dafür war, dass die beiden Toei verließen.

Kurz nach seinem Ausscheiden bei Toei gründete Hara 1972 das Studio Top Craft, den unmittelbaren Vorgänger von Studio Ghibli. Auch bei Ghibli blieb Hara bis 1991 involviert und produzierte einige Filme, bevor er das Studio wegen einer Meinungsverschiedenheit mit Hayao Miyazaki über den Bau eines neuen Studiogebäudes verließ. Hara starb 2021 im Alter von 85 Jahren.
