Descripción
Osamu Dezaki was a Japanese anime director, screenwriter and mangaka, and co-founder of the animation studio Madhouse. The unique style of his anime stood out from the crowd in the 1970s and 1980s and soon became commonly associated with Japanese animation works. His brother Satoshi Dezaki is also an anime director and founder of the animation studio Magic Bus.
Already as a child, Dezaki was fascinated by the works of Osamu Tezuka and also spent a lot of time at the cinema. During his high school years, he made his debut as a mangaka and published various short stories, rather than working in a factory after leaving school.
In 1963, he applied for a job as an animator advertised by the animation studio Mushi Production and – on the advice of anime director Gisaburou Sugii, who had read his manga publications – was hired as one of three out of a total of 500 applicants. There he worked on works such as “Astro Boy” and “Goku’s Adventure”, first as an animator, later also as a storyboard artist and scriptwriter for individual episodes. In 1970, he made his debut as an anime director with the TV anime “Ashita no Joe”. Two years later, he founded the animation studio Madhouse with some colleagues. Until the late nineties, he worked on numerous anime productions as a director and scriptwriter, before his activities declined after the turn of the millennium.
Dezaki was a chain smoker during his lifetime. He died of lung cancer in April 2011 at the age of 67.
