Streaming service Funimation will shut down in April 2024

publicado en por RocketsSnorlax
An era is coming to an end: the US streaming service Funimation, which was launched in 2009, will be shut down on April 2, 2024, after around two years of phasing out.The streaming service is currently available in the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Peru; in Brazil, the service was discontinued on July 31, 2023. The service was never available in continental Europe, but it worked together closely with the European service Wakanim from 2019.

In the current season, Funimation is offering five more simulcasts in addition to “One Piece”: “Banished from the Hero’s Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside: Season 2”, “Blue Exorcist: Shimane Illuminati Saga”, “Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki 2nd Stage”, “Kingdom: Season 5”, “The Daily Life of the Immortal King: Season 4”. As in previous seasons, these are all sequels to series that have already been released by Funimation and are also available on Crunchyroll.

According to aniSearch statistics, Funimation’s US streaming portfolio currently comprises around 1,300 titles, of which around 90% are already available on Crunchyroll (US). Although the merger of Funimation and Crunchyroll began more than two years ago, around 150 anime from the Funimation streaming catalogue are still unavailable on Crunchyroll (in the US), and around two dozen more are still missing the English dubbed version. Funimation also streams various other series in the home video version, while only the original TV version is available on Crunchyroll. It is striking that the titles not yet (fully) streamed include numerous titles from Aniplex (a co-owner of Crunchyroll and Funimation), Nozomi Entertainment (acquired by Crunchyroll in 2022) and NBC Universal.
As part of the merger, some former Funimation titles were also added to the Crunchyroll catalogue in other territories.

Existing subscriptions to Funimation are transferred to Crunchyroll. On request, your own watch history will also be moved. However, existing digital copies will not be transferred.

Since June 2022, Blu-rays (and occasionally DVDs) have been released in the US under the Crunchyroll brand instead of Funimation, although no new titles have been added to the affordable Essentials and Classic product lines since then. There has also been a slight drop in the total number of disc releases, with even some fan favourites of the past few years not even having a US Blu-ray release date.

For its physical releases, Crunchyroll is planning to switch from SDS Distribution (a joint venture between Universal and Warner Bros.) to Sony in April 2024, pausing disc releases for a few weeks.
