Descripción

FUNimation was founded on the 9th May 1994 as FUNimation Entertainment and is an American film distributor in the areas of anime and Asian films.

In May 2003, FUNimation founded Group 1200 Media and became a subsidiary of this group.

The company’s first licence was “Dragon Ball Z” in September 1994, which was successfully launched on US TV shortly afterwards. In September 1996, the first VHS cassettes appeared with the first “Dragon Ballcinema film and the first TV episodes of the series, although the distribution was initially still carried out in cooperation with Pioneer. This cooperation also led to the release of the first DVD at the end of 1997. In 1999, FUNimation took over VHS distribution itself, and a year later, also DVDs. On the 19th July 2005, FUNimation was the last US publisher specialising in anime to release a VHS (Vol. 32/32 of “Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files”).
The overwhelming success of “Dragon Ball Z” on US television and in the home video sector ensured rapid growth for the company, and FUNimation became the undisputed US market leader in the DVD segment in 2008 through the acquisition of numerous Geneon and ADV licences. As early as 2007, FUNimation was one of the first publishers specialising in anime to enter the Blu-ray business and in 2009 released more anime on Blu-ray than all other US publishers combined. FUNimation has its own dubbing studio, which now produces broadcast dubs for selected anime, which can be accessed on the in-house streaming platform less than 1 month after the Japanese TV broadcast. In April 2016, the streaming service was expanded to the UK and Ireland and later to Australia and New Zealand.

From September 2016 to the 9th November 2018, FUNimation worked closely with Crunchyroll. Under the partnership, Crunchyroll streamed FUNimation titles in the original with subtitles – mostly outside the US & Canada – while FUNimation dubbed particularly popular Crunchyroll titles in English and later released them on DVD & Blu-ray.

On the 31st July 2017, Sony Pictures Television Inc. announced that it was buying 95% of the company’s shares. The other 5% remained with the founder and then CEO Gen Fukunaga, who stepped down in early 2019.

Although the main focus of its business is in the US and Canada, FUNimation has also held licensing rights for numerous anime in other English-speaking countries since the mid-2000s. Some of these titles are sub-licensed to Madman (Australia) and alternate UK publishers and/or officially released in the US as multi-region discs (back of packaging).

Since 2019, the US versions of selected titles have also been available through Madman and Manga UK – these are simply supplemented with the mandatory youth protection notices and, in some cases, new barcodes. In May 2019, Japan’s Sony Corporation purchased the UK-based company Manga Entertainment Ltd, subsequently transferring its shareholding in FUNimation at the end of the month.

At the end of September 2019, Sony and Aniplex Inc. formed the joint venture company Funimation Global Group, LLC.

On the 30th March 2020, FUNimation discontinued its streaming service in Australia and New Zealand and referred customers to Madman’s AnimeLab as an alternative, which is now also part of the Sony-owned group of companies. This move was reversed on the 17th June 2021, and AnimeLab customers were automatically migrated to FUNimation.

In November 2020, FUNimation expanded its streaming service first to Mexico and Brazil and later to other countries in Latin America.

In early December 2020, Sony announced that they were acquiring Crunchyroll from AT&T. In the process, Crunchyroll is to become a subsidiary of the Funimation Global Group. On the 1st March 2022, the decision was announced that FUNimation’s streaming offering will be integrated into Crunchyroll’s service. The last FUNimation Blu-rays were released on the 31st May 2022, and from June 2022, this division was continued under the Crunchyroll brand.
