Netflix, Inc. is an American company active in the distribution and production of films and series.

The company was founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randoph as an online video store. Films on DVD and later also on Blu-ray could be ordered online and delivered to the customer’s home. A good 10 years later in 2007, Netflix also entered the VoD (video-on-demand) business.

Until September 2010, Netflix was only active in the United States, but expanded to Latin America and the Caribbean in 2011. Finally, in 2012, Europe followed with the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia. The following year, the Netherlands was added, as well as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Luxembourg in September 2014. In 2015, further countries were added, such as Cuba and Japan.

In addition to licensing films and series, Netflix also produces its own productions, which have supplemented the range of licensed films and series since February 2013.
