“Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie” is set in 2027, one year after the Fourth World War. It may have been fought without nuclear weapons, but despite all, it had caused innumerable losses and massive suffering. No wonder, then, that on the one hand, the situation in Japan is still very tense and that, on the other hand, many people resort to the advanced means of cybernetics to alleviate physical misery or to prolong their own lives. But modern technology is all too readily the target of cyber-terror, just like right now as the Fire Starter virus continues to spread, turning innocent people’s bodies into the tools of criminals – and criminals themselves – thanks to the manipulation of their memories.

When the Prime Minister of Japan is killed with a bomb, the situation threatens to escalate. In order to track down the perpetrator as quickly as possible, the head of internal security, Daisuke Aramaki, bypasses the time-consuming bureaucracy and hires the secret, independently operating organisation Section 9, led by Motoko Kusanagi, to track down the assassin. But the members of Section 9 soon realise that they are dealing with a huge conspiracy – and possibly with a familiar face …

»Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie« spielt im Jahre 2027, ein Jahr nach dem Vierten Weltkrieg. Dieser mag zwar ohne Atomwaffen geführt worden sein, hatte aber trotz alledem viel Verluste und auch Leid erzeugt. Kein Wunder also, dass auf der eine Seite die Situation in Japan noch immer sehr angespannt ist und dass andererseits viele Menschen auf die fortschrittlichen Mittel der Kybernetik zurückgreifen, um körperliches Elend zu lindern oder das eigene Leben zu verlängern. Doch allzu gern ist die moderne Technik das Ziel von Cyber-Terror, so wie auch jetzt, als der Virus Fire Starter sich weiter verbreitet und Körper von Unschuldigen dank Manipulation der Erinnerungen zum Werkzeug von Verbrechern macht – und damit selbst zu Verbrechern.

Als während eines Bombenanschlags der Premierminister Japans umkommt, droht die Lage zu eskalieren. Um den Täter möglichst schnell ausfindig zu machen, umgeht der Chef der Inneren Sicherheit, Daisuke Aramaki, die zeitraubende Bürokratie und engagiert die geheime, unabhängig agierende Organisation Sektion 9, geführt von Motoko Kusanagi, um dem Attentäter auf die Spur zu kommen. Doch die Mitglieder der Sektion 9 müssen bald erkennen, dass sie es hier mit einer gewaltigen Verschwörung zu tun haben – und womöglich mit einem altbekannten Gesicht …

In un prossimo futuro, la tecnologia ha ormai saldamente affondato le sue radici nella societa’. Gli impianti cibernetici sono largamente diffusi e i robot godono delle stesse liberta’ degli esseri umani, e tutti sono collegati grazie al proprio Ghost attraverso i flussi dati della rete. Il maggiore Motoko Kusanagi e la Sezione di Pubblica Sicurezza 9 devono fronteggiare una lotta continua contro la nuova generazione di terroristi tecnologici e di cyber-hacker. Ma le cose prendono una piega diversa quando Motoko viene coinvolta in un caso che coinvolge un hacker soprannominato Fire Starter! A causa sua, Motoko finira’ col tuffarsi sempre piu’ profondamente nella realta’ senza limiti della rete.
