Cuando una familia de estos animales descubre que los hombres están acabando con el bosque donde viven para construir una nueva urbanización, se preparan para combatirlos haciendo uso de todo su poder y de sus habilidades en una guerra como nunca antes se ha visto..

“Pom Poko” is about a group of Tanuki who live peacefully in a forest area near Tokyo in the late sixties. However, because the city is ever expanding, construction projects ensure that the forest area becomes smaller bit by bit. Some 30 years later, the remaining area is so small that there is hardly enough space and food left for the Tanuki. This all leads to them starting to fight each other – until the matriarch, Oroku, unites the rival groups to stop the forest clearing.

For years, the Tanuki used illusions and other tricks to fight against the construction projects, even causing victims in their ranks – but it didn’t help. After turning to other clans for help, three Tanuki elders from the distant Shikoku Island rush to their aid to offer their skills and advice. In Shikoku, the Tanuki have managed to continue to be revered by the people, but will the local Tanukis find a way to stop the development? Or will they ultimately have no choice but to cave in and adapt to the changing times?

»Pom Poko« handelt von einer Gruppe Tanuki, die in den späten Sechzigern friedlich in einem Waldgebiet nahe Tokio lebt. Weil sich die Stadt aber immer mehr Raum benötigt, sorgen Bauprojekte dafür, dass die Waldfläche Stück für Stück kleiner wird. Etwa 30 Jahre später ist die verbleibende Fläche so klein, dass kaum noch genug Platz und Nahrung für die Tanuki vorhanden ist. Das alles führt dazu, dass diese anfangen, einander zu bekämpfen – bis die Matriarchin Oroku die rivalisierenden Gruppen vereint, um die Waldrodung zu stoppen.

Über Jahre hinweg kämpfen die Tanuki mittels Illusionen und anderen Tricks gegen die Bauprojekte und sorgen auch für Opfer in deren Reihen – doch es hilft nichts. Nachdem sie sich Hilfe suchend an andere Clans gewendet haben, eilen ihnen drei Tanuki-Älteste von der fernen Shikoku-Insel zu Hilfe, um ihnen mit ihren Fähigkeiten sowie Ratschlägen zur Seite zu stehen. In Shikoku ist es den Tanuki gelungen, weiterhin von den Menschen verehrt zu werden, doch werden die hiesigen Tanukis einen Weg finden, die Bebauung zu stoppen? Oder bleibt ihnen am Ende nichts anderes übrig, als klein beizugeben und sich dem Wandel der Zeit anzupassen?

Pom poko è la favola dello scontro tra la moderna urbanizzazione e la natura. Un gruppo di Tanuki abitanti delle colline Tama è costretto ad abbandonare le case a causa del rapido sviluppo e della costruzione di nuovi edifici e centri commerciali. Visto che diventa sempre più difficile trovare cibo e rifugio, decidono di lottare tutti insieme per preservare il loro habitat. I Tanuki hanno perfezionato l’antica arte della trasformazione fino a potersi muovere come gli esseri umani su due gambe. Usano così questi poteri per limitare l’avanzamento dell’urbanizzazione. Ma sarà sufficiente?
