With the help of medication or hypnosis, you can awaken a so-called Esper ability in people. But Touma Kamijou is only moderately excited about his first ability. It is the most powerful Epser ability, which first seems like a very positive thing, but also has a lot of drawbacks. In short, he is just always really unlucky. He is unpopular with girls, is always challenged to duels by other Espers and is pretty much always on the run because of it.

Toumas life changes drastically, however, when he meets a little girl called Index. Index is a nun in the church in Academy City. But she isn’t just any ordinary nun, because she has the knowledge of over 103,000 books. Soon Touma realises that these books aren’t common books. On top of that, he finds out that there are certain organisations who want to acquire Index’ knowledge and would kill for it.

So Touma’s and Index’ fates intertwine – before he knows it, he is stuck in the middle of an adventure of enormous proportions.

Durch Medikamente oder Hypnose kann man in Menschen sogenannte Esper-Fähigkeiten wecken. Doch über seine eigene Fähigkeit ist Touma Kamijou nur mäßig begeistert. Es ist nämlich die mächtigste Esper-Fähigkeit überhaupt, was, neben dieser zunächst positiven Tatsache, ziemliche viele Nachteile mit sich bringt. Kurz gesagt: Er hat einfach ständig unglaubliches Pech. Bei den Mädels ist er unbeliebt, wird andauernd von anderen Espern zu Duellen herausgefordert und ist deshalb eigentlich ständig auf der Flucht.

Toumas Leben ändert sich allerdings radikal, nachdem er ein kleines Mädchen namens Index kennenlernt. Index ist eine Nonne der Kirche in Academy City. Allerdings ist sie nicht irgendeine gewöhnliche Nonne, denn sie hat das Wissen von über 103.000 Büchern. Bald wird Touma klar, dass es sich bei diesen Büchern nicht um gewöhnliche Bücher handelt. Darüber hinaus muss er feststellen, dass es bestimmte Organisationen gibt, die das Wissen von Index an sich bringen wollen und dafür skrupellos über Leichen gehen.

So verquicken sich die Schicksale von Touma und Index – ehe er sich versieht, ist er Hals über Kopf in ein Abenteuer riesigen Ausmaßes verstrickt.
