Kimihiro Watanuki se siente constantemente perseguido por monstruos, fantasmas y espíritus que se sienten misteriosamente atraídos hacia él. Pero estos monstruos no son visibles para las personas sin poderes y es por eso que le tachan de loco. Todo cambiará cuando Watanuki entre en una tienda en la que venden deseos, la tienda de Yuko Ichihara, una poderosa bruja que le ofrece la posibilidad de dejar de ver fantasmas a cambio de pagar un precio de igual valor que la energía que ella requiere para realizar dicha labor. Pero Watanuki no tiene dinero para pagar ya que sus padres murieron en un accidente muchos años atrás y él se quedó solo, así que Yuko finalmente le ofrece encarga
Watanuki Kimihiro suffers from the fact that he can see ghosts. One day, when he is once again haunted by these beings, he ends up in the store of Yuuko, who promises to help him. She grants him the wish of not seeing his pursuers anymore and that the ghosts will leave him alone for good. In exchange, he must work for her and encounters, again and again, the Japanese world of mythology full of danger and mystery.
Watanuki Kimihiro leidet darunter, dass er Geister sehen kann. Als er eines Tages wieder einmal von diesen Wesen verfolgt wird, landet er in dem Geschäft von Yuuko, die verspricht, ihm zu helfen. Sie erfüllt ihm den Wunsch, dass er seine Verfolger nicht mehr sehen kann und die Geister ihn endgültig in Ruhe lassen. Doch dafür muss er für sie arbeiten und so begegnet er immer wieder aufs Neue der japanischen Welt der Mythologie voller Gefahren und Geheimnisse.
