Barefoot Gen (1983)

Japan in the summer of 1945: World War II is raging and for three years now the world power USA has also been an adversary of Japan in the Pacific War. Six-year-old Gen only knows the world tormented by war, but nonetheless lives an arduous yet fulfilling life with his family. However, his father’s anti-military attitude brings some reprisals for the family and food shortages pose a great danger to Gen’s pregnant mother. So he and his little brother Shinji help their parents with the work to get through the hard times. Miraculously, their home has so far been spared from bombing and the family looked hopefully towards the future, but nothing could have prepared little Gen for the hell that breaks loose over Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 …

Japan im Sommer des Jahres 1945: Der Zweite Weltkrieg tobt und seit drei Jahren ist nun auch die Weltmacht USA ein Kontrahent Japans im Pazifikkrieg. Der sechsjährige Gen kennt die Welt nur vom Krieg gepeinigt, doch nichtsdestotrotz lebt er mit seiner Familie ein zwar beschwerliches, aber dennoch erfüllendes Leben. Die anti-militärische Einstellung des Vaters bringt jedoch einige Repressalien für die Familie mit sich und Nahrungsknappheit stellt eine große Gefahr für Gens schwangere Mutter dar. So helfen er und sein kleiner Bruder Shinji ihren Eltern bei der Arbeit, um die schwere Zeit zu überstehen. Wie durch ein Wunder blieb ihre Heimat bisher von Bombenangriffen verschont und die Familie blickte hoffnungsvoll in Richtung Zukunft, doch nichts hätte den kleinen Gen auf die Hölle vorbereiten können, die am 6. August 1945 über Hiroshima losbricht …
