Descripción
Kadokawa Shoten was an imprint of the Japanese publishing house Kadokawa Corporation, the main company of the Kadokawa Group.
The original publishing house was founded on November 10, 1945 by Genyoshi Kadokawa. The first seat was located in the Itabashi district of the city of Tokyo. In 1949, the paperback label Kadokawa Bunko was launched. The first title was “Crime and Punishment” by Dostoyevsky. The headquarters were moved to the Chiyoda district the following year. In 1952, the magazine Haiku was launched.
On April 2, 1954, the company was renamed Kadokawa Shoten Co., Ltd. founded. The Fujimi Shobou company was founded in 1972 with the purpose of publishing learning and textbooks by Kadokawa Shouten.
In 1974, the subsidiary Kadokawa Bunko Distribution Center was founded.
The company’s founder, Genyoshi Kadokawa, died in 1975. His son Haruki Kadokawa took over the company and became the new managing director.
In 1976, “Inugami-ke no Ichizoku” was released, the first of Kadokawa’s produced films. Sales of the paperback edition, the adapted novel, reached over 18 million copies. The Kadokawa Novels label was launched in 1981.
On April 1, 2003, a complete restructuring of the group of companies took place. To this end, the company Kadokawa Shoten was renamed Kadokawa Holdings (later renamed Kadokawa Corporation). In the course of this, a new subsidiary was founded with the name Kadokawa Shoten.
In 2007, the Kadokawa Shoten imprint was split. This resulted in Kadokawa Shoten, Kadokawa Magazines, Kadokawa Group Publishing, as well as other smaller companies that took on various tasks.
Many companies and imprints of the Kadokawa Group were merged and dissolved in 2011 and integrated into the Kadokawa Corporation. From this point on, Kadokawa Shoten will still be used as a trademark from time to time, but from this day on, only KADOKAWA will be used everywhere when mentioning the company’s titles. On October 1, 2013, the subsidiary was finally dissolved and converted into an imprint.
On April 1, 2015, Kadokawa decided to abandon the name “Kadokawa Shoten” and removed it from the corporate structure. On August 17, 2021, the brand’s website was also taken offline.
