Segunda Guerra Mundial (1939-1945). Seita y Setsuko son hijos de un oficial de la marina japonesa que viven en Kobe. Un día, durante un bombardeo, no consiguen llegar a tiempo al búnker donde su madre los espera. Cuando después buscan a su madre, la encuentran malherida en la escuela, que ha sido convertida en un hospital de urgencia.

Sannomiya station towards the end of the Second World War: a boy in rags is starving, but the only person who notices is more interested in his belongings than in the boy.

A bombing raid on the Japanese city of Koube resulted in numerous deaths, and many children were orphaned virtually from one moment to the next. This is also what happens to Seita and his little sister Setsuko, who miraculously survive the detonation of several bombs nearby unharmed, but their mother is less fortunate – she is admitted to hospital with severe burns and dies only a short time later.

Seita and Setsuko come to live with their aunt, though they are not welcome there. They get enough to eat to keep them from starving. As the situation becomes more and more unbearable for the two siblings, they decide to fend for themselves, yet their situation does not improve at all …

Bahnhof Sannomiya gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs: Ein Junge in Lumpen ist am Verhungern, doch die einzige Person, die es mitbekommt, interessiert sich mehr für dessen Habe als für ihn.

Durch einen Bombenangriff auf die japanische Stadt Koube gab es nicht nur zahlreiche Todesopfer, viele Kinder wurden praktisch von jetzt auf gleich zu Waisen. So ergeht es auch Seita und seiner kleinen Schwester Setsuko, denn die Detonation mehrerer Bomben in der Nähe überstehen die beiden wundersamerweise unverletzt, doch ihre Mutter hat weniger Glück – mit schweren Brandwunden wird sie in ein Krankenhaus eingeliefert und stirbt nur wenig später.

Seita und Setsuko kommen zu ihrer Tante, doch willkommen sind sie dort nicht; sie bekommen gerade genug zu essen, um nicht zu verhungern. Als die Lage für die zwei Geschwister immer unerträglicher wird, beschließen sie, sich auf eigene Faust durchzuschlagen, doch ihre Situation verbessert sich dadurch keineswegs …
