The Legend of Zorro (1996)

“The Legend of Zorro” is the anime adaptation of the classic Zorro.

California in the early 19th century: The country is still a Spanish colony and the ruling upper class consists of despots who fleece the people with their taxes and live luxuriously themselves. The political situation is unstable, but the army still suppresses any resistance. Then a masked hero unexpectedly appears: Zorro! With his grandiose fencing skills and daring actions, he manages to get the better of the tyrants time and time again.

The mask protects his true identity: As Diego Vega, he is known in real life as a lazy and cowardly nobleman who does not treat his people badly, but would never be considered for heroic deeds. In the fight against the army he is supported by his servant, little Bernard, who also appears masked as a kind of Mini-Zorro. In addition, Diego is in love with Lolita. He repeatedly saves her from enemies in the guise of Zorro, but Lolita only fancies her saviour; she wants nothing to do with the “weakling” Diego.

Kalifornien im frühen 19. Jahrhundert: Das Land ist noch eine spanische Kolonie und die herrschende Oberschicht besteht aus Despoten, die mit ihren Steuern das Volk schröpfen und selbst luxuriös leben. Die politischen Verhältnisse sind instabil, aber noch unterdrückt die Armee jeden Widerstand. Da taucht unerwartet ein maskierter Held auf: Zorro! Mit seinen grandiosen Fechtkünsten und gewagten Aktionen schafft er es ein ums andere Mal den Tyrannen eins auszuwischen.

Die Maske schützt seine wahre Identität: Als Diego Vega ist er im echten Leben als fauler und feiger Landadliger bekannt, der seine Leute zwar nicht schlecht behandelt, jedoch für Heldentaten nie in Frage käme. Im Kampf gegen die Armee wird er von seinem Diener unterstützt, dem kleinen Bernard, der als eine Art Mini-Zorro ebenfalls maskiert auftritt. Außerdem ist Diego in Lolita verliebt. Er rettet sie in Gestalt von Zorro immer wieder vor Feinden, doch Lolita schwärmt nur für ihren Retter; vom »Schwächling« Diego will sie nichts wissen.
